All About Ragdoll Kittens and Cats

Ragdoll Breed History

Ragdolls have been capturing hearts since the 1960s. The breed began in California with the late Ann Baker, who started with her free-roaming cats and selectively bred them to create kittens with the gentle temperament and affectionate nature she envisioned.

In 1975, husband and wife Denny and Laura Dayton continued to refine and develop the breed, helping to establish the Ragdoll standard we know and love today. Their dedication and careful breeding laid the foundation for the Ragdoll’s calm disposition, striking blue eyes, and signature “floppy” personality that make them such beloved companions.

Today, Ragdolls are cherished around the world for their beauty, gentle nature, and unwavering devotion to their families — truly living up to their reputation as the “puppy-like” cats who love to follow you wherever you go.

Ragdoll Breed Basics

Ragdolls are large, semi-longhaired cats known for their stunning blue eyes and soft, silky coats. Adults typically weigh between 15–20 pounds and come in a variety of beautiful color and pattern combinations.

The four recognized patterns are:

  • Bi-color
  • Van
  • Mitted
  • Colorpoint

Ragdolls also come in six primary colors: seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. Their points can be solid, lynx, tortie, or torbie (tortie and lynx combined) — making for an incredible range of unique and beautiful looks.

All Ragdoll kittens are born white or cream, with their colorpoints beginning to appear within 5–10 days. As they grow, their colors continue to deepen and develop into the gorgeous shades this breed is loved for.

No two Ragdolls are ever exactly alike — each one is a beautiful reflection of the breed’s charm, elegance, and personality.

Ragdolls as pets

Ragdolls get their name from their signature trait — going completely limp when picked up — a true reflection of their gentle, trusting nature. This makes them wonderful companions and ideal family pets.

Ragdolls are large, laid-back cats who are happiest when they’re with their people. They love to follow you from room to room, greet you at the door, and curl up beside you whenever they can. Their calm, affectionate personalities make them great with children and other animals, and their patience and sweetness set them apart from many other breeds.

They’re often called “dog-like” cats for their social, loyal behavior. Many Ragdolls will come when called, learn routines, and even play fetch! They enjoy being part of family life and rarely want to be far from those they love.

(Ours love to run to the door alongside our dogs and are always ready to curl up in a lap — no matter what we’re trying to do.)

With their loving temperament, intelligence, and gentle presence, Ragdolls make extraordinary companions — bringing warmth, peace, and affection into every home they join.
