Ragdolls have been around since the 1960s. The Ragdoll breed was started in California by the late Ann Baker and her free roaming cats. She bred her cats to other free roaming cats in her neighborhood to get kittens with the temperament and criteria she was looking for. in 1975 husband and wife Denny and Laura Dayton set out to and eventually developed the breed standard we have today.
Ragdolls are large (15-20lb), semi-longhaired cats with beautiful blue eyes and one of four patterns; bi-color, van, mitted, or colorpoint, and in one of six colors; seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, or cream. Points can be solid, lynx, tortie, or torbie (tortie and lynx) As you can tell, that's a lot of different color combinations! All kittens are born white or cream and the colorpoints start to show in 5-10 days.
Ragdolls get their name from their classic personality trait of going limp when picked up making them great family pets!. Ragdolls are a large, laid back cat breed that are more happy to be with you then most other cat breeds and are often referred to as "dog-like" cats. (Ours run to greet us at the door with the dogs and lie on my lap no matter what I'm trying to do.) Ragdolls don't tend to be jumpers and their beautiful coats take minimal grooming. Ragdolls are also playful cats who often play with their claws retracted. Because of this laid back personality, we only adopt our Ragdoll kittens out to be indoor cats. All-in-all ragdolls are well behaved and pretty easy to care for! Let us know how we can help you find the right match for you and your family!
